Humanscale History

Humanscale stands for: 1) Superior performance 2) Effortless operation 3) Excellent quality The company requires that their products solve a problem, are comfortable and less complicated, so people can focus on their task at hand.
Humanscale achieves superior performance by designing furniture in accordance with how people actually work — how they sit, type and move at their desks. Since people don’t think about their posture or the physical relationship of their body to objects while they work, Humanscale products do it for them. Their products react to peoples’ movements and adjust to their bodies, instead of the other way around for unsurpassed comfort. Although familiar in appearance, Humanscale products function differently, intuitively, with no learning curve and they are designed for rigorous use and maximum durability. Most are guaranteed for life.
Humanscale’s development of high-performance ergonomic office tools began in 1983. Beginning with its first product — an anti-glare filter that improved the visibility of monochrome monitors in the early 1980s — the company has methodically designed some of the most innovative products in the industry. In the 1990s with the introduction of high-performance articulating keyboard systems, Humanscale made a very significant contribution to the ergonomic industry. In 1999, Humanscale took the contract furniture industry by storm with the introduction of the Freedom chair, designed by ergonomics pioneer Niels Diffrient. The revolutionary seating solution broke new ground by combining unprecedented functionality with minimal manual controls, utilizing dynamic mechanisms that respond to the requirements of each individual user automatically. In 2009, Humanscale sold its millionth Freedom chair.
